Koh Kong, a southwestern province of Cambodia, is a place of stunning natural beauty, with lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and the majestic Cardamom Mountains. However, thousands of children in Koh Kong lack access to quality education, a fundamental right that can break the cycle of poverty and open doors to a brighter future.
Thus this year Goducate has been setting up a building that could offer a variety of programs to serve and support the community through education.
For now, our educational facilities consist of rented houses in 2 locations. These houses are also mostly used for church activities. We have been providing education in these 2 locations since 2013.
Our classes are held on Sundays because the children attend government schools from Monday to Saturday. Most of the students are at primary or secondary school level, though some are attending high school. In each location the house is used for 2 classes. Our 2 full-time teachers and a volunteer teacher spend the morning at one location, and the afternoon at the other. The teachers offer a Sunday-School program, which provides education through bible stories to about 200 students weekly.
We also give essential school supplies, address malnutrition through nutritious meal programs, and foster character and moral development through education. The school supplies that are given annually include notebooks, pens, pencils, pencil cases, rulers etc.
We also go to outlying villages to conduct what we call Extension Classes to teach stories from the Bible in order to build good character and morals. These classes are generally conducted under the shade of a tree. Meals are also provided to the children.
