In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, Goducate’s DigiHwy (digital highway),
emerged as a beacon of hope for remote communities in the Philippines in 2023. It
had been set up in 2021 (see previous article published on 27 Jan, 2023). DigiHwy recognizes that true progress lies in collaboration. Hence, after 2 years of serving remote areas, the DigiHwy team forged partnerships with both government bodies and private organizations. The mission was to achieve digital inclusivity while
aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The heart of DigiHwy’s success lies in its collaboration with barangay (village) captains—the local community leaders in the Philippines. Together, DigiHwy and the local leaders established satellite internet and solar power backup systems in barangay halls. These installations proved invaluable during disasters, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity when it mattered most.
DigiHwy’s innovative concept of community-driven ownership is a game-changer.
Community members, whether individuals, families, or organisations, pay for the
service, which fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility. The service offers
willing young men training in basic technological support. This dual benefit not only
empowers the community but also creates employment opportunities.
DigiHwy’s commitment extends beyond connectivity. DigiHwy partnered with Tech
for Good organizations to provide donated laptops to barangay captains, who then
distribute them to the community. The laptops were donated by Singapore
companies renewing their stock. These laptops became a lifeline for education and
remote training. Suddenly, the community had access to knowledge.
Mid-2023 marked a significant milestone—the partnership with Thunderquote, an
international social enterprise specializing in software development. Together, the
partners served various government agencies. DigiHwy’s satellite internet and power
backup solutions became essential tools for digital transformation.
DigiHwy’s technological prowess shone during a national scouting jamboree.
DigiHwy developed a low-connectivity resilient app, used by some 40,000
participants. Even in areas with weak network signals, the app delivered critical information. Living in the Philippines means facing frequent calamities. Thus DigiHwy upgraded
its infrastructure to withstand disasters, to ensure continuous service delivery.
DigiHwy remains grateful for the partnerships that opened doors. Its values align with those of its partners who believe in progress, empowerment, and community well-being.
